Wine Description for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Piaggione 2017 by Salicutti
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with delicate garnet shimmer – a classic Sangiovese dress that already promises elegance and maturity on the eye.
- Nose
- This Piaggione makes a powerful, self-assured impression. The nose reveals a striking melange of juicy red and black cherries, dark raspberries and wild strawberries, underpinned by cinnamon, earth and charcoal. Hovering above is an aromatic top note of mint, sage and rose petals. Already quite accessible, the wine unfolds additional facets with air contact.
- Palate
- On the palate, the openness continues: juicy, ripe, yet with crisp fruit structure. Cherries and raspberries meld with star anise, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and grilled herbs. The tannin presents itself silky and finely woven, threaded through with peppery, vibrant acidity. The texture is firm and gripping at once, with a sensual note of sweet extract and fine creaminess. An impressive achievement for the challenging 2017 vintage.
- Finish
- Long, precise and with sustained fruit-spice complexity. The fine balance between structure and juiciness carries far.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the 1.2-hectare Vigna della Piaggione between 420 and 450 metres altitude. The skeletal limestone soils lend the wine its characteristic minerality and tension – typical of Montalcino’s finest vineyard sites.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese, spontaneously fermented at a maximum of 28°C, gently pressed. Ageing took place over three years in large wooden casks of various sizes (10, 20 and 40 hl), followed by twelve months in bottle. Bottled unfiltered – craftsmanship at the highest level.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with beef fillet steaks, Sichuan style with green beans, risotto with chicken liver and sage or, surprisingly, also with mapo tofu – the wine’s spicy notes harmonise beautifully with bold, aromatic dishes.
- Special Features
- Salicutti’s Piaggione impressively demonstrates that great wines can be made even in difficult vintages. The combination of traditional ageing and modern precision makes this Brunello a prime example of Tuscan winemaking art.
