Wine Description for Héloise IGP 2017 by Chêne Bleu

Colour & Appearance
Nearly opaque garnet red with fine brick-coloured rim lightening – a visual indication of the beautiful maturity of this southern Rhône wine.
Nose
Concentrated and profound, the Héloïse 2017 presents itself with a complex aromatic profile of richly ripe black cherries, blackberries and plums. Mediterranean notes of black olive tapenade, rosemary and allspice join these, underpinned by a concentrated, meaty jus character.
Palate
On the palate, the cuvée shows perfect maturity: deep, voluminous and with a seductive chalky texture. Dark berries, cherries and cherry harmonise with liquorice and dark chocolate. A sweet fruit core is elegantly threaded through with a cool mineral vein – the altitude makes itself felt.
Finish
Long and spicy with fine tannin structure that is perfectly integrated. The minerality carries through to the end.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards lie spectacularly between 530 and 540 metres altitude in the southern Rhône hills on stony limestone-marl soils. The north-westerly aspect of the Grenache and the south-westerly exposure of the Syrah provide optimal ripening conditions whilst maintaining freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A classic southern Rhône cuvée of approximately two-thirds Syrah (vines over 50 years old), around 20% Grenache Noir (over 60 years old) and a touch of Roussanne. Aged for 18 months in barrique. The old vines deliver impressive concentration and depth.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with braised lamb rack with herb crust, beef braised stew, game or a hearty cassoulet. Also excellent with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Pecorino.
Special Features
Named after the famous philosopher Héloïse d’Argenteuil, the beloved of Pierre Abélard. Chêne Bleu’s flagship wine shows perfect drinking maturity in 2017 and combines southern opulence with high-altitude elegance.
