Huet

Domaine Huet that is highest quality, great craftsmanship and wines that are made to last for decades.

A single grape variety - chenin blanc - is the basis for very different wine styles here in Vouvray on the Loire. Origin-related still wines, expressive sparkling wines, and sweet wines with great longevity, which is otherwise only known from German predicates. This sounds suspiciously like the attributes of our German Rieslings. In many ways, these two grape varieties have many parallels. Both reflect their terroir. Both live from acidity and fruit. Both are said to have great longevity, and both varieties tolerate residual sweetness or noble rot extremely well. The result is one of the most exciting sweet wines in the world. Only the chenin blanc the aromatic development is quite different.

Vouvray is located between Angers and Orleans on the picturesque river Loirewhich is characterised by castles and palaces. The valley is declared a Unesco World Heritage Site and not only attracts wine tourists. The Domaine was long influenced by Gaston Huët. A pioneer of quality winegrowing, he pursued his high goals to the end. His son-in-law, Noël Pinguet, continued this tradition and achieved legendary status in the wine industry.

More about Huet

Chenin Blanc stands for fruit expression paired with a natural acidity. The deep rock tunnels are used as cellars of the wineries in the region. Neutral containers like stainless steel and old wooden barrels are essential for maintaining the sensory characteristics of these wines in the cold cellars.

Another parallel to Riesling is the multiple harvests in one and the same plot. Thus, the dry grapes are first harvested(sec)then the slightly more mature residual sweetness (demi-sec) and finally the selection-like Moelleux read. In exception vintages still the Moelleux 1er Trie follows about it.

Pioneers of Biodynamics

Long before the big names of Burgundy, Gaston Huët introduced biodynamics as early as the late 1980s. This was the last adjusting screw to decode the DNA of his vineyards in combination with the Chenin Blanc. All activities are concentrated on the three vineyards Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Clos du Bourg. Depending on the vintage, there are different bottlings from these three layers - up to four. Nature sets the pace and thus, there is often only one of these stages from the sites. The occurrence of botrytis - the noble rot of ripe grapes - is also a decisive criterion as to which styles can be produced in a vintage. A dry Le Mont radiates with energy, minerality and complexity. A demi-sec from the site Clos de Bourg provides grandiose possibilities of food accompaniment. Poultry from the oven with morel cream and this wine is a poem.

The departure of Pinguet, who is still active as a consultant, has not diminished the quality. The story continues to be told and the relevant guides celebrate the wines year after year. Rightly so! They are great wines and absolutely world-class for their grape variety and region.

The wines

The estate produces Sec, Demi-Sec, Moelleux and Moelleux 1ère Trie ("first selection") wines from each of the three vineyards. Besides this, an excellent Pétillant from the grapes of all three sites.

Le Haut-Lieu

The original founding vineyard of Huet is about 9ha in size. It has the richest soil of the three vineyards, consisting of deep, limestone clay. The wines are correspondingly more accessible.

Le Mont

This Grand Cru vineyard, has a privileged location in the already favoured Première Côte. With less clay and more stones than Le Haut-Lieu, produces Le Mont Wines that are intensely mineral in their youth. With age, the wines develop great length and finesse.

Clos de Bourg

Gaston Huet believed this vineyard to be the greatest of all Vouvray's vineyards. With the most barren, stony soils of the Première Côte, the intense minerality of Le Mont combines here with the generous texture of Le Haut-Lieu.

Cuvée Constance

Since 1989, the winery produces in special years an almost magical noble sweet wine from grapes affected with botrytis. Regularly the Cuvée Constance Wine to the greatest noble sweet wines of the world.
