Wine Description for Grenache Bois Long VdF 2020 from Saint Jean Du Barroux

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, slightly transparent garnet red with a lightening rim – a classic expression for Grenache from higher elevations, placing elegance before opulence.
Nose
Enchantingly southern French: ripe morello cherries, blackcurrant and raspberry spirit meet the warmth of fresh brioche. These are joined by liquorice, a hint of dried wood and the mineral coolness of ground stone – an aromatic map of the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Palate
Here Philippe Gimel’s skill shines through: at 15.5% alcohol, he achieves a wine of remarkable precision. The texture is silky and powdery, the tannin lining the palate without dominating. Cherry and blackcurrant liqueurs meld with delicate herbs and warm spices. What distinguishes this wine: a fine acidity structure and vibrant minerality that, despite southern richness, provide clarity and drinking flow.
Finish
Persistent and spicy with lingering herbal notes and a fine stony freshness that elegantly balances the warm character.
Terroir & Origin
The Bois Long parcel sits at 300 metres elevation in the Dentelles de Montmirail, surrounded by olive trees, thyme, rosemary and curry plants. The rock from the Middle Triassic lends the wine its characteristic minerality – a terroir you can taste.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Grenache Rouge, hand-harvested on 11 September 2020. Vinification without destemming in concrete vat, followed by eleven months‘ ageing in enamel tank and nine months bottle age – a purist approach that places fruit and terroir front and centre.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with braised lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs, stuffed onions with pork forcemeat or lentils with thyme for a vegetarian option. The wine pairs well with bold, Mediterranean flavours.
Special Features
A prime example of modern, terroir-focused Grenache from the southern Rhône – powerful, yet never heavy, with the finesse of higher elevations and the craftsmanship of a winemaker who prioritises precision over power.
