Wine Description for Grenache Les Usclades VdF 2020 from Saint Jean Du Barroux

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, slightly transparent garnet red with a brightening rim – a typical sight for Grenache from higher elevations, prioritising elegance over opulence.
Nose
Seductive and multi-layered: ripe wild strawberries and raspberries dominate, accompanied by warm yeast notes, mature plums and a hint of liquorice. Subtle nuances of stems and stone also emerge – an aromatic portrait of the stony Dentelles de Montmirail.
Palate
Here the Grenache reveals its sensual side: warm, deep red fruit in lavish abundance, carried by round, almost melting tannins. The wine glides effortlessly across the palate, filling the mouth with warmth and fruit concentration, yet never feeling heavy. A fine tannin structure and sensual acidity lend the wine balance and drinkability.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering red fruit and a mineral freshness that recalls the Triassic stone of its origin.
Terroir & Origin
The Les Usclades parcel sits at 350 metres elevation in the Dentelles de Montmirail, completely surrounded by forest and hedgerows. The Middle Triassic stone shapes the mineral character of this wine and lends it a cool elegance rarely found in this concentration in the southern Rhône.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Grenache, hand-harvested on 7 September 2020. Three-quarters destemmed, fermentation in concrete vat, followed by eleven months ageing in stainless steel and a further nine months in bottle. This purist vinification allows fruit and terroir to speak unadorned.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with slow-braised pork belly Siu Yuk with fennel vegetables, Moroccan lamb and apricot tagine or aubergines filled with anchovies and cheese. The wine pairs particularly well with spicy, aromatic meat dishes and Mediterranean vegetable preparations.
Special Features
A Vin de France that demonstrates great wines do not necessarily require a prestigious appellation. The elevation and ancient stone lend this Grenache a finesse and freshness that clearly sets it apart from typical southern Rhône wines.
