Wine Description for Grenache Les Usclades VdF 2020 from Saint Jean Du Barroux

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, slightly transparent garnet red with a brightening rim that already hints at the elegance and finesse of this altitude-grown Grenache in the glass.
Nose
Seductive bouquet of ripe wild strawberries and raspberries, underpinned by warm yeast notes and ripe plums. Fine nuances of liquorice, a subtle leather note and mineralic hints that reflect the Triassic stone of the vineyard site complete the picture.
Palate
Here the Grenache displays its full sensual power: warm, deep red fruit in ripe expression, carried by an almost melting tannin. The wine glides across the palate with remarkable lightness, filling the mouth with warmth and fruit fullness whilst retaining structure. Fine acidity and elegant tannins provide balance despite the 14.5% alcohol.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering red berry fruits and a fine mineralic note that recalls the stony terroir.
Terroir & Origin
The Les Usclades parcel sits at 350 metres altitude in the Dentelles de Montmirail, completely surrounded by forest and hedgerows. The Middle Triassic stone gives the wine its characteristic minerality and freshness despite the southern Rhône warmth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Grenache, hand-picked on 7 September 2020, three-quarters destemmed. Fermentation in concrete vat, followed by eleven months maturation in stainless steel and nine months bottle age. This gentle vinification preserves fruit clarity and freshness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with long-braised pork belly Siu Yuk with fennel vegetables, Moroccan lamb and apricot tagine or aubergines stuffed with anchovies and cheese. The fruit fullness and soft tannins harmonise beautifully with spiced, braised meat dishes.
Special Features
An authentic Vin de France that combines the altitude-typical character of the Dentelles de Montmirail with the sensual fruit of Grenache. Despite the warm 2020 vintage, the wine displays remarkable elegance and drinkability.
