About the wine

Domaine de Villeneuve has 8.4 hectares in the north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, not far from Château de Beaucastel. The biodynamically cultivated vines are between 30 and more than 100 years old. 70 % Grenache are used here, as well as 15 % Mourvèdre and 15 % Syrah, 80 % of which are destemmed. The wine is fermented in cement tanks. It matures for 18 months in barrels, demi-muids and used barriques.

dark garnet-red

The 2013 Vieilles Vignes opens slightly reductive with notes of flint and rubber, which quickly evaporate and make room for violets and iris, dark wild berries and leather. There is also a hint of cherry liqueur.

On the palate, the wine shows the typical juicy acidity of the vintage. It permeates the ripe, slightly cooked dark fruit and balances it. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a pleasantly silky tannin structure and, despite the ripe fruit, a freshness that makes it an early drinking vintage.

Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt

  • Irish Stew with thyme, parsley and orange zest
  • Sweet beetroot with lentils, yuzu and watercress
  • Wild hare braised with Provençal herbs and salsify
