Wine Description for Château Falfas Côtes de Bourg AOC 2019 1500ml Magnum by Château Falfas
- Colour & Appearance
- A vibrant cherry red presents itself in the glass of this large-format Bordeaux.
- Nose
- The bouquet is wild, untamed and full of breed. Alongside dark berry fruit such as cassis, wild cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, a fascinating, delicately smoky note of warm leather and a touch of horse sweat emerges – a wonderfully traditional, honest Bordeaux character. Unusual floral nuances of bergamot and lavender meet winter spices like grated cinnamon, juniper and black pepper. With a little air in the glass, notes of chocolatey sweetness and freshly roasted coffee beans also reveal themselves, underlaid by a cool, metallic freshness.
- Palate
- The palate opens in a gripping, lively and astringent fashion with a present yet superbly integrated tannin structure. A fine graphite note provides a noble coolness on the palate. The acidity is animating and carries the detailed, slightly tart fruit. Here, the animal notes give way entirely to a balanced, relaxed elegance, proving just how much uncomplicated drinking pleasure the Right Bank can offer.
- Finish
- The finish is remarkably persistent, carried by the bitter freshness of bergamot and a fine, lingering fruit acidity that clings to the palate for a long time.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines thrive on the historic south-facing slopes of the estate, which towers majestically over the Gironde Estuary. The geological foundation consists of a limestone and clay subsoil interspersed with silex (flint), which lends the wines their cool structure.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- This classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc was vinified with indigenous yeasts. The ageing for the Château’s first wine takes place for 11 to 14 months in barriques (of which 30% is new oak). The bottling is carried out unfiltered.
- Food Pairings
- This structured red wine is an excellent partner for rich meat dishes such as a classic Côte de Boeuf with pommes allumettes and sauce Béarnaise or slowly braised beef cheeks with creamed savoy cabbage and mashed potatoes. Vegetarians can ideally pair it with a lukewarm bulgur salad with artichokes and rocket.
- Special Features
- Château Falfas is regarded as an absolute pioneer: as early as 1988, the estate under Véronique Cochran converted entirely to biodynamic cultivation. Due to the slower maturation in the large format, the magnum bottle of the 2019 vintage promises a particularly high ageing potential and showcases the untamed, authentic side of the Côtes de Bourg appellation.
