Wine Description for Viognier IGP 2022 from Chêne Bleu

Colour & Appearance
Bright pale golden yellow with a fresh, slightly green tinge – a visual hint of the vineyard’s altitude and cool nights.
Nose
Opulent and seductive, this Viognier displays the characteristic notes of lily of the valley, honeysuckle and clover. Behind these unfold ripe stone fruits – apricots and peaches – complemented by subtle hints of beeswax and a delicate vanilla note from the oak ageing.
Palate
On the palate, the 2022 demonstrates the classic roundness of the variety: silky, full-bodied, with succulent fruit. The ripe acidity carries the apricot and peach fruit elegantly and prevents any heaviness despite the 14.5% alcohol. In the background, subtle almond notes and fine oak spice emerge, lending structure to the wine without imposing themselves.
Finish
Medium to long, with persistent fruit and a fine interplay between creamy texture and fresh minerality. The vanilla fades gently.
Terroir & Origin
The 20-year-old vines are rooted at 550 metres altitude on a north-facing slope – a rarity in the southern Rhône. The stony clay-limestone soil imparts mineral freshness to the wine and prevents excessive opulence despite the warm climate.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Viognier, gently pressed and spontaneously fermented. The eight-month ageing in Demi-Muids (600-litre barrels) integrates subtle oak notes without masking the aromatic finesse of the variety.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This powerful Viognier pairs well with intense flavours: grilled swordfish, lobster with saffron sauce, Coq au Vin blanc, creamy mushroom risotto or spicy Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass. Also a revelation with mature Comté or Beaufort.
Special Characteristics
With this Viognier, Chêne Bleu proves that the variety can shine even at extreme altitude. The combination of southern sun and cool nights creates a rare balance between opulence and freshness.
