Wine Description for Côte Rôtie „Côteaux de Bassenon“ AOC 2020 from Maison Stephan

Colour & Appearance
Deep purple with violet reflections and an almost black core – a colour intensity that already visually announces the extreme concentration of this wine.
Nose
The nose reveals an impressive aromatic density: elderberries, sloe and plums merge with blackberries and violets. Beneath lie spicy notes of smoke, charcoal and bresaola, complemented by pumpernickel, leather and darkly fermented tobacco. With air contact, a fascinating depth and complexity unfolds.
Palate
On the palate, the true elegance of this Côte-Rôtie reveals itself: despite the aromatic concentration, the wine flows with vibrant acidity and stunningly fine tannins across the tongue. Violet pastilles meet juniper and anise, followed by intense garrigue spice, mocha with cardamom and smoked meat. The dark, ripe fruit tastes extract-sweet, yet never jammy – a deep minerality ensures this youthful wine possesses energy and vibrancy.
Finish
Long-lasting and multifaceted, with lingering notes of dark berries, spices and a subtle smokiness.
Terroir & Origin
The vines are rooted in extreme steep slopes on migmatite, granite and biotite. The vineyard, planted in 1896 and replanted in 1989, yields microscopic harvests of only 15-20 hl/ha – a key to the extraordinary concentration of this wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A classic Côte-Rôtie blend of 40% Serine, 40% Syrah and 20% Viognier. Vinified according to Jules Chauvet with 24-hour cool pre-fermentation and 20-day carbonic maceration. The 24-month maturation takes place in used Tronçais barrels. Unfiltered, unrefined and minimally sulphited.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pigeon with truffle in puff pastry crust, lamb with Moroccan spices from the barbecue or a rich French onion soup.
Special Features
An exceptionally crafted Côte-Rôtie that combines natural wine philosophy with traditional terroir expression. Still young and closed – this wine deserves patience or generous decanting.
