Colour & Appearance

Deep, luminous cherry red with lively violet reflections and bright rims – youthful and inviting in the glass.

Nose

A captivating, fresh and multi-layered bouquet: sour cherry and sweet cherry dominate, flanked by elderberry, blackberry and a hint of raspberry. Particularly compelling are the exotic notes of fig and mulberry. Behind these unfolds a herbaceous thicket of nettle, marjoram and parsley – herbal, invigorating, almost meditative. In the background shimmer balsamic tones, delicate cedarwood and a whisper of dark chocolate. Never sweet, always precise and vibrant.

Palate

With merely 11% alcohol, this wine displays remarkable depth and raciness. Fine-grained tannins – reminiscent of the finest Barbaresco – lend it structure without harshness. The acidity is brilliantly integrated, the fruit juicy and invigorating. Sour cherry and fresh berry fruit characterise the palate, carried by a saline minerality that unmistakably reflects the granite of its homeland.

Finish

Long, elegant and persistent. The ethereal-balsamic aromas thread through the finish like a red line and seem scarcely to end. A wine that invites contemplation.

Terroir & Origin

The grapes hail from Quinta da Lomba in Dão, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela. Over a hundred-year-old vines are rooted deep in granite soils – the foundation for this wine’s pronounced minerality and gripping acidity. Since 2012, Niepoort has managed the estate with the aim of awakening the dormant potential of these historic vineyard sites.

Grape Variety & Vinification

A blend of Jaen and Baga – two autochthonous grape varieties of Dão, which here reveal their most elegant side. Traditional fermentation in open granite lagares, maturation in large, used wooden casks. The 2019 vintage brought ideal conditions: a dry, hot summer ensured an early harvest at the end of August, dense colour extraction and balanced acidity levels.
