Colour & Appearance

Deep glowing cherry red with bright, violet reflections – a visual hint at the youthfulness and freshness of this remarkable wine.

Nose

An olfactory masterpiece that elegantly conceals its years of maturation. Sweet and sour cherry dominate initially, flanked by elderberry, blackberry and raspberry. Fascinating are the nuances of figs and mulberries – never sweet-concentrated, always fresh and vibrant. Behind this unfolds an ethereal bouquet: nettle, marjoram, lovage and parsley lend herbal spice. In the background, balsamic notes of cedarwood, cocoa butter and dark chocolate – sublime and mature.

Palate

At a lean 11% alcohol, this wine develops remarkable presence. Racy and saline, it presents itself with fine-grained tannins reminiscent of first-class Barbaresco. The balance between acidity and tannin is masterful, the wine remaining juicy and invigorating throughout. Sour cherry dominates on the retro-nasal, accompanied by the ethereal and balsamic aromas in perfect step.

Finish

Long, fresh and of impressive persistence. The fruit remains present whilst the spicy and balsamic components seem to resonate endlessly.

Terroir & Origin

Quinta da Lomba at the foot of the Serra de Estrela in Dão is home to over hundred-year-old vines on granite soils. This geological peculiarity lends the wine its characteristic minerality and gripping acidity. Since 2012, Niepoort has cultivated these historic vineyards, which had been neglected for decades.

Grape Variety & Vinification

A blend of Jaen and Baga from over hundred-year-old vines. The balanced 2019 vintage allowed for an early harvest beginning at the end of August. Traditional open fermentation in granite lagares, maturation in used large wooden casks. Minimal plant protection thanks to ideal weather conditions.

Food Pairing Recommendations

Roasted duck, game birds, grilled lamb rack, mushroom risotto, beef fillet with herb crust or aged hard cheese. The elegance and freshness of the wine harmonises wonderfully with aromatic herbs and earthy components.

Special Characteristics

A wine that demands time and rewards it – despite its maturity, it appears remarkably young. The combination of low alcohol and high complexity makes it one of the most exciting representatives of modern Dão and a personal favourite in the Niepoort portfolio.
