Niepoort’s Bioma Vintage from old vines represents the purist approach of a house dedicated to authentic Port wine tradition. The 2016 vintage produced concentrated, structured wines in the Douro Valley. With 19.5% alcohol and pronounced residual sweetness, this Vintage Port displays the typical power and opulence of a declared vintage, yet combines the elegance and freshness characteristic of Niepoort. The designation „Vinha Velha“ refers to old vines that naturally yield low crops and exceptional concentration.

Terroir & Origin

The Douro Valley with its steep slate terraces and extreme microclimate produces Port wines of unique intensity. The old vineyards from which this Bioma originates are rooted deep in metamorphic slate, which imparts minerality and structure. Niepoort manages these parcels according to biodynamic principles – hence the name „Bioma“ – and respects the natural balance of the ecosystem. The continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters shapes the concentration and aromatics.

Grape Variety & Vinification

The classic Douro blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and the rare Tinto Cão embodies the essence of traditional Port wine production. Touriga Franca contributes structure and floral notes, Tinta Roriz brings fruit fullness and tannin framework, whilst Tinto Cão – an almost forgotten variety from old vineyards – provides finesse and longevity. Vinification follows traditional methods with foot treading in lagares, followed by fortification and maturation in old wooden casks. The half-bottle format (375ml) is ideal for refined enjoyment for two.

Food Pairing Suggestions

This powerful Vintage Port harmonises beautifully with aged Stilton or Portuguese Serra da Estrela. Classically with dark chocolate of high cocoa content or a chocolate soufflé.
