Wine description for Gevrey-Chambertin AOC 2022 by Trapet Père & Fils

Colour & appearance
Bright cherry red with delicate violet hints – crystal clear, vibrant, a wine that promises tension even in the glass.
Nose
Remarkably distinctive for a Villages wine: blackcurrant, cassis and blackberry, accompanied by a touch of sour cherry that lifts the dark fruit. Beneath lies an earthy layer – wet stones, a hint of liquorice, balsamic spice. A bouquet that whispers rather than shouts, and captivates precisely for that reason.
Palate
Juicy, cool, with remarkable drive. Sour cherry sets the tone, flanked by intense herbal spice. Fruit and acidity are perfectly balanced, the tannins are fine-grained, silky yet with plenty of grip – structure without heaviness, exactly as Jean-Louis Trapet intends.
Finish
Clean and linear, with lingering cherry fruit and a saline-chalky note reminiscent of the appellation’s fossilised oyster beds. It remains present for a long time without ever becoming heavy.
Terroir & origin
Gevrey-Chambertin, northern Côte de Nuits – here Domaine Trapet has tended its plots for generations. Jean-Louis discovered fossilised oyster shells in his vineyards, remnants of an ancient seabed; his Cuvée Ostrea even bears this soil in its name. Three Grands Crus – Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin – form the heart of the domaine, and the Villages wine shares their pride of origin.
Grape variety & vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, vinified with the restraint that defines the house: for the Villages wines, only 20 to 25 per cent new wood is used. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 1996, Demeter-certified since 2009. Jean-Louis Trapet’s credo: guide, never force.
Food recommendations
The juicy cherry and fine bite pair beautifully with pan-fried duck breast with cherries, saddle of venison in a herb jus or a simple coq au vin. Also a reliable match for mushroom dishes – such as chanterelles on toasted bread.
Special features
Seven generations of pioneering spirit: forebear Arthur Trapet secretly grafted vines onto American rootstocks in the 1880s – illegal at the time, today the foundation of modern viticulture. This Villages wine demonstrates that finesse in Gevrey-Chambertin is not a question of status, but of philosophy. A glass that begins quietly and lingers long in the memory.
