Wine description for Autochthon 2021 1500ml Magnum from Bencze Birtok

Colour & appearance

A clearly cloudy golden yellow colour that immediately reveals the artisanal, unfiltered nature of this wine.

Nose

Initially closed and reductive - a wine that demands air. After decanting, a fascinating bouquet of wild herbs unfolds: Sage, Mint and Rosemary dance with notes of woody pear and quince. The yeasty hints are an expression of its youth and authenticity, while verbena and lime blossom complete the aromatic complexity. A fragrance that cannot deny its volcanic origins.

Palate

The palate reveals a remarkable precision. The vibrant acidity carries flavours of Granny Smith and orange zest, while a subtle tannin is reminiscent of apple peel. The moderate alcohol content of 11.5% gives the wine an impressive lightness and drinkability. The long finish reveals nuances of aniseed and white pepper - evidence of the volcanic soils of Lake Balaton. A wine with remarkable development potential that still has years of ageing ahead of it.

General information

This magnum made from Hungarian original grape varieties (Furmint, Hárslevelü and Kéknyelü) epitomises István Benczes' uncompromising approach to natural wine. The grapes are selectively harvested at different stages of ripeness, gently fermented and matured in amphorae. An authentic expression of the volcanic terroir of Lake Balaton.

Food pairing suggestions

The complex structure and moderate acidity predestine this wine for Poultry dishes with herbs, fried char or Goat cheese. It looks particularly harmonious with Hungarian specialities like Paprika chicken or Langos with sour cream.

Special features

The magnum bottle offers ideal maturing conditions for this evolving wine. Bencze is one of the pioneers of the Hungarian natural wine revival and works strictly biodynamically. This wine not only represents the renaissance of autochthonous Hungarian grape varieties, but also the rediscovery of traditional winemaking methods in combination with modern striving for quality.
