Wine information
Xérico 2018 is a local wine from Viñaspre in Rioja Alavesa, made from 85 percent Tempranillo and 15 percent Viura, the most important white wine variety in Rioja. The vineyards are between 15 and 50 years old and most of them have calcareous soils. The grapes are partly destemmed and partly fermented with the stems. The wine is aged exclusively in concrete.

Nose
2018 was an Atlantic year in Rioja Alavesa, so the bouquet is dominated by crisp, fresh blueberries and cherries. The wine is clean and clear, there is nothing overripe or lush about it. It is stimulating and makes you want to drink it.
Palate
The very fresh impression continues seamlessly on the palate. The white Viura, which makes up 15 per cent of the wine, certainly plays a role here. The focus of winemaker Roberto Oliván is also clearly on freshness and finesse, not on power and extract. The wine has a grippy texture, the tannin is fine-grained, the finish is juicily animating. Xerico is a wonderful drinking wine of great clarity that comes across as peppy and almost light despite 14 percent alcohol. This is what the new Rioja tastes like.
