The Remírez de Ganuza winery is located in the centre of the small town of Samaniego in Álava, the capital of Rioja Álavesa. It is a complex of modern and classic buildings that were brought together and remodelled into a winery by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza in 1989. In the 1970s and 1980s, Fernando bought and sold vineyards in Rioja Álavesa. He was therefore very familiar with the region and knew what to look for when selecting the best plots. In 2010, Jose Ramón Urtasun took over the winery, which has been organic since the beginning, including some biodynamic practices. Today, the winery comprises over eighty hectares of Tempranillo, Viura and Malvasía. They are spread over six areas in the Cantabrian mountain range of Samaniego, Leza, Elciego, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Laguardia and Abalos.
