Colour & Appearance

Muted cherry red with a lively violet shimmer – a wine that reveals in the glass that it hasn’t played by the rulebook.

Nose

Here the 2024 immediately makes clear that it has nothing to do with conventional Beaujolais clichés. Wild and exuberant, yet of fascinating depth: earth, smoke and liquorice form the dark foundation, over which juicy wild raspberries, blueberries and blackcurrant unfold alongside an intoxicating floral delicacy. Complex, honest and simply seductive.

Palate

Refreshing and invigorating – this Gamay flows across the palate with a deceptive lightness. Exuberant fruit meets silky tannins and a vibrant, stimulating acidity. Mineral depth and earthiness lend it substance and bite. Not a wine for analysing – a wine for drinking.

Finish

Long, juicy and with lingering mineral freshness. Leaves an irresistible desire for another glass.

Terroir & Origin

A blend of Gamay parcels from various villages in Beaujolais – not a single cru, but a cross-section through the soul of this landscape. Declared as Vin de France, which gives the Bret brothers the freedom to vinify without the constraints of appellation regulations.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Gamay, vinified with consistent artisanal philosophy: whole bunches, wild yeasts, partial carbonic maceration and nine months ageing in wooden casks. Neither fined nor filtered – the wine arrives in the glass exactly as it leaves the cellar. Purist, uncompromising, convincing.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Ideal with uncomplicated, flavourful small bites: charcuterie, Lyon sausage, rillettes, a good piece of country cheese or pissaladière. But it also works simply as what it is – a wine for the moment, without accompaniment.

With merely 11.5% alcohol, the Men in Bret Zen is a prime example of contemporary, drinkable natural wine without heaviness. Quantities are limited – those who hesitate will be drinking water.
