Wine Description for Juliénas „Les Fouillouses“ AOC 2020 by Romanesca

Colour & Appearance
Medium, quite transparent garnet red – classic for Gamay grown on volcanic terroir. The clarity and luminosity in the glass promise elegance.
Nose
A fascinating aromatic profile that showcases the full range of Gamay: violets, roses and lilac meet sweet cherries and raspberries. Beneath this, an earthy layer with damp earth, moss and lightly toasted herbs – the volcanic terroir speaks a clear language.
Palate
Pure, crystalline berry fruit and dark cherries dominate the opening. As it develops, liquorice and subtle Indian spices unfold. The vital acidity structure and powdery, fine tannins form a perfect framework. Smoky and saline notes lend the wine additional complexity – an impressive balance between power and finesse.
Finish
Long, polished and carried by remarkable energy. The mineral notes linger whilst the fruit fades elegantly.
Terroir & Origin
The 1.05-hectare parcel lies on the renowned vineyard site Les Fouillouses north-west of Juliénas. The slate-like blue volcanic rock (Pierre bleu) and diorite decisively shape the character of this wine and lend it its mineral depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Approximately 70-year-old Gamay vines with modest yields of 25-35 hl/ha. Following hand-harvesting and sorting, semi-carbonic maceration took place over twelve days with whole bunches. Ageing for twelve months in five-year-old oak imparts structure without overwhelming the fruit – masterfully crafted.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Steak tartare, duck or goose confit, charcuterie with Brie, but also an excellent choice with grilled salmon or mushroom dishes.
Special Features
A textbook example of Beaujolais’s renaissance: old vines, low yields, volcanic terroir and precise winemaking technique result in a Beaujolais Cru of international calibre – far removed from the Primeur cliché.
