Wine Description for Riesling Mölsheim „Treasure Collection“ VDP Erste Lage 2018 from Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Deep golden yellow with vibrant green reflections – a wine that has not yet relinquished its youthfulness despite five years in the cellar.
Nose
Impressively complex: kumquat peel and orange flesh meet citrus zest and a fine ginger note. Beneath lies a profound minerality reminiscent of damp limestone – still unpolished, yet of great elegance.
Palate
Here the full magic of the terroir reveals itself: saline minerality meets invigorating fruit and a subtle sweetness that is perfectly integrated. The texture recalls spring water – cool, clear, vibrant. The wine glides across the palate with remarkable playfulness, playful yet structured.
Finish
Long, precise, with a resonance that lingers for minutes. The stony minerality dominates the finale – an echo of the bare limestone rock in which the vines are rooted.
Terroir & Origin
The Mölsheim vineyards in the Zellertal benefit from their exposed altitude and the cool winds of the Donnersberg massif. The vines struggle through a thin layer of gravel directly into the bare limestone rock – a sparse, stony terroir that „throws up“ stones each year and demands laborious hand work. This austerity fundamentally shapes the character of this Riesling.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling from VDP Erste Lage. A wine at the beginning of its drinking window with many years ahead of it. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. underscores the elegance. Be sure to decant and serve in large glasses, not too cold.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried langoustine with peaches and fennel, red mullet with sun-dried tomato and candied lemon or saffron cauliflower with roasted pak choi. The saline minerality harmonises beautifully with seafood and aromatic vegetable dishes.
Special Characteristics
Part of the „Treasure Collection“ from Battenfeld-Spanier – a still young, unpolished diamond with magnificent ageing potential. Pure vibrancy in the bottle, rewarded by patience.
