Wine Description for Gewürztraminer Turckheim 2024 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a typical appearance for a young Gewürztraminer from the early-ripening gravelly soils of Turckheim.
Nose
A masterclass in Gewürztraminer elegance: rose and muscat lead the aromatic spectrum, followed by peonies, lilac and lily of the valley. These are joined by notes of candied fruits and a subtle peppery spice. The nose is classically refined, without the sometimes overwhelming opulence of the variety – here the terroir speaks.
Palate
Outstanding balance is the key: A silky, smooth texture meets impressive acidity tension, which lends the wine freshness and dynamism. The elegant ripeness never comes across as heavy-handed. Particularly remarkable is the mineral undertone – it works in the background, flows through the entire sip and acts like a natural driving force. Dense, complex and wonderfully integrated.
Finish
Persistent and precise, with lingering floral notes and that vibrant minerality which makes the wine so compelling to drink.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the gravelly alluvial soils of the Herrenweg in Turckheim – a terroir that ripens early and quickly, which is increasingly important in the context of climate change. The vines, averaging 55 years old (for Zind-Humbrecht „young“ vines!), yielded a moderate harvest of 49 hl/ha.
Variety & Vinification
Pure Gewürztraminer, aged in large wooden casks. The pH of 3.7 underscores the vibrant acidity structure. Ageing in large wood preserves fruit clarity and allows the terroir to take centre stage.
Food Pairing Recommendations
An excellent food companion: Ideal with Asian cuisine (Thai curries, dim sum), Munster cheese, foie gras, pan-fried salmon with ginger or spicy dishes with cumin and coriander.
Special Characteristics
A Gewürztraminer that prioritises elegance over power – typical of the precise signature of Zind-Humbrecht. The minerality and acidity tension make it a modern, gastronomically versatile representative of its variety.
