Colour & Appearance

Luminous cherry red with characteristic rusty reflections and a lighter rim – a classic appearance for Nebbiolo that already hints at the complexity of this Barolo.

Nose

The Castiglione 2020 presents itself as an elegant introduction to Vietti’s Barolo world. Wild strawberries, sour cherry and barberry unfold with restraint, yet precisely calibrated. The red fruit is complemented by green walnut and roasted hazelnut. Typical Nebbiolo notes of damp forest floor, undergrowth and moss lend depth. Spicy accents of black pepper, juniper and abundant sage provide tension. The bouquet feels iron-rich, bloody – a promise that whets the appetite.

Palate

Here the Castiglione reveals itself as an accessible, open Barolo style, without sacrificing character. Fruit and spice are beautifully balanced, whilst a gripping acidity structure draws the fruit aromas into the finish. The wine presents itself fleshy and bloody at once, with a prominent tannin structure that provides framework and ageing potential. The fruit aromas cling excellently to the bitter compounds – a successful balance that gains additional elegance through a silky mouthfeel.

Finish

In the finish, the piquant aromas of forest and herbs return and underscore the classic, earthy character of this Nebbiolo. The finish is medium to long, with lingering spice.

Terroir & Origin

The Castiglione is Vietti’s interpretation of a classic Barolo from various cru sites throughout the Barolo region. The grapes come from calcareous marl soils of varying composition, which lend the wine its characteristic minerality. Vines between 10 and 45 years old, Guyot training, approximately 4,500 plants per hectare.

Food Pairing Suggestions

The bloody, fleshy nature of the wine harmonises beautifully with braised venison shoulder with savoy cabbage, but also with vegetarian dishes such as oyster mushroom tacos or roasted aubergine with Mediterranean herbs. The earthy notes pair equally well with robust mushroom dishes and game.
