Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Lazzarito 2020 1500ml Magnum by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with violet reflections and first rusty nuances – a Barolo that still displays its youth openly, yet already shows the first signs of its ageing potential.
- Nose
- This Lazzarito is an archetypal Serralunga Barolo – uncompromising, spicy, earthy. The nose opens slowly with bloody spice, allspice, red pepper and juniper. Beetroot forms the aromatic bridge between earthiness and fruit. Forest floor, undergrowth and brushwood dominate initially, before wild sour cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant assert themselves. With air contact, wild rose hip and red fruit tea develop – an olfactory interplay reminiscent of Vietti’s legendary Cerequio.
- Palate
- Wild, impetuous, demanding – this Barolo commands attention. The pro-active acidity structure is the backbone of this wine and defines the character of the vineyard site. Fruit and spice recede, earthiness, elegance and provenance take the lead. Here the terroir of Serralunga speaks in its purest form: powerful, yet never loud, sublime in its harmony. A wine that rests within itself whilst simultaneously vibrating.
- Finish
- Long, soulful, vibrant. The earthy notes merge with the wild fruit into a sustained finale that lingers for minutes and underscores the mineral precision of the vineyard site.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Lazzarito vineyard site in Serralunga d’Alba resembles a natural amphitheatre with south-west exposure. Vietti’s two hectares lie between 330 and 380 metres on calcareous-clayey soil – ideal conditions for Nebbiolo with structure and longevity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, harvested in early October. One month maceration in steel tank, followed by 30 months ageing in large oak casks and supplemented in barriques. Unfiltered bottling – a purist vinification that gives maximum expression to the terroir.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Beef fillet Rossini with truffle-infused potato gratin, poussin with Périgord truffle and salsify, or surprisingly: grilled celeriac with Café de Paris butter – the earthy spice of the wine harmonises perfectly with umami-rich dishes.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises even better ageing conditions for this already exceptional Barolo. A wine for the patient, which should age at least until 2030, yet already displays its class today.
