Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Castiglione 2020 1500ml Magnum by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Luminous cherry red with characteristic rusty reflections and a lighter rim – classic Nebbiolo optics that already announce the elegance of this Barolo in the glass.
Nose
A gentle yet multifaceted opening: wild strawberries, sour cherry and barberry present themselves in subtle doses, never obtrusive. These are joined by green walnut, roasted hazelnut and earthy notes of damp forest floor, undergrowth and moss. The spice component of black pepper, juniper and abundant sage lends the wine an iron-laden, almost bloody complexity – seductive and appetite-awakening.
Palate
The Castiglione reveals itself as an accessible yet by no means simple Barolo. Fruit and spice maintain their balance, whilst a gripping acidity forms the backbone. The present tannin structure is firm but not aggressive – the fruit aromas cling elegantly to the bitter notes. Meaty and bloody in character, with a silky mouthfeel that guarantees elegance and drinkability. The piquant forest and herb notes return powerfully.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering herb aromas and a fine bitterness that invites the next sip. The acidity remains present and refreshing.
Terroir & Origin
An assemblage from various outstanding cru vineyard sites throughout the Barolo region on limestone marl soils. Vietti’s interpretation of a classic Barolo unites the characteristics of different communes into a harmonious whole.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo from vines between 10 and 45 years old, Guyot training with approximately 4,500 vines per hectare. The ageing follows a traditional style that underscores the elegance and accessibility of the 2020 vintage.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Classically with braised venison shoulder with savoy cabbage, surprisingly also with oyster mushroom tacos or roasted aubergine with Mediterranean herbs. The iron-laden note harmonises perfectly with red meat and game.
Special Features
The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises even more harmonious development and makes this accessible Barolo an ideal introduction to Vietti’s single vineyard philosophy.
