Wine description for Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel dry 2008 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Rich lemon yellow with mature, golden reflections – a Riesling that carries its 16 years with grace and whose colour testifies to impressive maturity.
Nose
The first impression surprises with opulent fruit abundance: fully ripe fruit ranging from apple to plum, accompanied by seductive caramel notes and light butter biscuits. With air contact, the aromatics develop more subtly and reveal the classical elegance of a mature Wachau Riesling. This evolution in the glass is characteristic of the biodynamically farmed wines from Nikolaihof.
Palate
On the palate, the wine presents itself as dense, mature and well-structured. The harmony between fruit, acidity and mineral substance is remarkable – a masterclass in balance. The complexity has clearly gained through maturity without the wine losing its freshness.
Finish
Very appealing length with an exotic finish that evokes ripe tropical fruits – an unexpected, fascinating conclusion for an Austrian Riesling of this maturity.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „Vom Stein“ is a location within the Silberbichl vineyard near Mautern. Spanning just 4.2 hectares, the vineyard extends in a north-northeast orientation between 209 and 237 metres above sea level. Rigol soils with loam, loess and Danube gravel characterise the terroir and lend the wine its distinctive structure and minerality.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This mature Riesling harmonises beautifully with pan-fried char or brown trout, veal brisket with apple horseradish, Wiener Schnitzel or also mature alpine cheese. The exotic notes also pair well with Asian cuisine with moderate spice.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – Nikolaihof has allowed this wine to mature in its own cellar for 16 years. As a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Austria (Demeter-certified since 1971), the estate impressively demonstrates the ageing potential that Federspiel Rieslings can develop.
