Wine description for Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel dry 2008 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Rich lemon yellow with mature, golden reflections – a Riesling that carries its sixteen years with dignity and displays its maturity with confidence.
Nose
Initially opulent and lush: fully ripe fruit ranging from apple to plum, along with caramel notes and light butter biscuits. With air contact, the nose develops more elegantly, the opulence giving way to finer complexity – typical of a mature Wachau Riesling that has left its youthful exuberance behind.
Palate
Dense, mature and excellently structured. The texture is silky, the balance between fruit and acidity remarkable. The complexity reveals itself in multifaceted aromas that harmonise beautifully together. Not a trace of fatigue – this wine is in its finest drinking phase.
Finish
Very appealing length with an exotic finish that recalls mango and passion fruit – a delightful surprise in an Austrian Riesling of this age.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „Vom Stein“ is a parcel within the Ried Silberbichl in Mautern. The 4.2-hectare vineyard extends in a north-north-east orientation from 209 to 237 metres above sea level. The rigol soils composed of loam, loess and Danube gravel impart the Riesling with its characteristic minerality and ageing potential.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect companion to pan-fried zander or char, veal schnitzel with mushroom sauce, mature alpine cheese or Wachau apricot dumplings. The exotic notes also harmonise wonderfully with Asian cuisine, such as Thai chicken curry.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – Nikolaihof, Austria’s oldest wine estate and biodynamic pioneer since 1971, has deliberately aged this wine in the cellar. An impressive testament to the ageing potential of Austrian Rieslings from top vineyard sites in the Wachau. Classically balanced at 12% alcohol.
