Wine Description for Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel Dry 1989 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Deep golden yellow with amber-hued reflections – 35 years of bottle age have bestowed this wine with impressive colour depth. Brilliant clarity despite its age.
Nose
A fascinating aromatic spectrum of mature Riesling elegance: honey, dried apricots and candied citrus peel combine with petrol notes, beeswax and a hint of chamomile tea. Beneath lies mineralic nuances of damp stone and a subtle nuttiness reminiscent of roasted almonds.
Palate
Despite moderate 11% alcohol, this wine displays remarkable structure and vitality. The acidity – Riesling’s life insurance – is perfectly integrated and lends the wine youthful freshness. Ripe stone fruits, quince and orange marmalade on the palate, carried by a saline minerality that speaks of the Danube gravel terroir. Medium body with silky texture.
Finish
Long, precise and driven by vibrant acidity. Mineralic notes and ripe citrus fruits linger, accompanied by fine spice and persistent freshness.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site “vom Stein” is a top-tier location within the Silberbichl in Mautern. The 4.2 hectares extend in a north-north-east orientation between 209 and 237 metres elevation. Rigol soils with loam, loess and Danube gravel characterise the mineralic nature of this extraordinary Riesling.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-seared scallops, calf’s sweetbread in butter, aged Comté or foie gras. Also excellent with Wiener Tafelspitz with apple horseradish or truffle risotto.
Special Features
Late Release 2024 – an impressive example of the ageing potential of Wachau Riesling from biodynamic viticulture. Nikolaihof, farmed biodynamically since 1971, demonstrates impressively with this 35-year-old wine that great Rieslings are timeless. A rare treasure from an outstanding vintage.
