Wine Description for Enkircher Ellergrub Auslese 2023 375ml by Weiser-Künstler
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow with delicate greenish reflections – a visual promise of concentration and freshness in equal measure.
- Nose
- An aromatic fireworks display that captivates immediately. Caramelised pear, quince compote and baked apple form the opulent foundation, whilst candied ginger and lime zest provide sharp counterpoints. Acacia honey lends depth, turmeric and saffron an exotic spiciness. These are joined by apricot, fig and raisin – a kaleidoscope of dried fruits. In the background, dried herbs drift through, lending remarkable freshness to this nectarine-like abundance. The nose seems endless.
- Palate
- The first sip reveals a fascinating duality: opulent fruit concentration meets crystalline clarity. The sweetness (156 g/l residual sugar) never feels heavy, but is perfectly balanced by forceful acidity (10.6 g/l) and a stony, mineral structure. The spice notes from the nose – turmeric, saffron, candied ginger – unfold on the palate with impressive precision. The herbal freshness enlivens, whilst the slate-typical minerality lends the wine tension and drive.
- Finish
- Seemingly endless. The acidity carries the complex aromatics far beyond the sip, whilst the stony minerality resonates long afterwards – a monumental finale.
- Terroir & Origin
- The terraced steep vineyard site Enkircher Ellergrub on the Mosel is legendary. Own-rooted vines averaging over 100 years old dig into hard, blue slate with quartz inclusions. At only 15 hl/ha yield, pure essence is created here.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling from ancient vines. The rainy vintage of 2023 required rigorous selection – only 300 litres were produced. Maturation in small steel vessels. Although the must weights would justify a Beerenauslese designation, a stylistic decision was made for the Auslese classification: the wine shows itself taut, drinking-friendly and lively.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Foie gras with brioche, blue cheese (Roquefort, Stilton), apple strudel with vanilla sauce, crème brûlée with citrus fruits or spicy Asian desserts with ginger and coconut.
- Special Features
- A rarity with only 300 litres produced. The extreme acidity-sweetness balance (10.6 g/l to 156 g/l) and moderate alcohol content (7.5% vol.) make this wine a monument to Mosel winemaking – capable of ageing for decades.
