Wine Description for Enkircher Ellergrub Auslese 2023 375ml by Weiser-Künstler
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow with delicate green reflexes – radiant and of remarkable depth, already hinting at the concentration in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose is simply stunning. Caramelised pear, quince compote and baked apple form an opulent fruit foundation, threaded through with candied ginger and fresh lime zest that brings lively tension. Acacia honey settles silkily over the top, whilst turmeric and saffron weave in an exotic spice. Freshly chopped almonds, dried apricot, fig and raisin lend the bouquet seemingly endless aromatic depth. In the background, dried herbs provide cool, herbal freshness – a wine that simply refuses to stop telling its story.
- Palate
- The first sip is nectarous and opulent – yet the fullness cannot disguise the fact that there is a precise, almost ascetic architecture at work here. 156 g/l residual sugar is held in check by a forceful, almost cutting acidity of 10.6 g/l. The spices – saffron, turmeric, ginger – are clearly and beautifully articulated on the palate too. The fruit remains as multifaceted as on the nose, the stony minerality of the slate runs like an invisible thread through the entire presentation.
- Finish
- Long, forceful and carried by an electrifying acidity that effortlessly lifts any heaviness. The finish is seemingly endless – and leaves a tingle that demands more.
- Terroir & Origin
- The terraced steep vineyard site Enkircher Ellergrub on the Mosel is counted among the great, little-known treasures of German winemaking. The hard blue slate with abundant quartz inclusions lends the wine its characteristic minerality and cool spice – unmistakable and inimitable.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Riesling from ungrafted vines with an average age of over 100 years – a biological heritage that directly translates into concentration and complexity. Yields are merely 15 hl/ha. In the wet vintage of 2023, the intensive selection required the utmost care; total production amounted to just 300 litres. Aged in small steel vessels to preserve the purity of the fruit. With 7.5% vol. alcohol, the wine remains light and approachable.
- Special Features
- Although the analytical values correspond to a Beerenauslese, the stylistic choice was deliberately made to classify it as Auslese Goldkapsel – because sensorially, that is exactly what the wine is: taut, accessible and brimming with lively drinkability. A decision that takes courage and deserves respect. Only 300 litres were produced – a wine of museum-like rarity.
