Viña Coqueta is made from the grapes of the eponymous Viña Coqueta vineyard of around five hectares, located in the foothills of the municipality of Samaniego. The vines of the single vineyard were planted in 1975, so that the orientation of this plot allows for a unique ripeness of the grapes, which are exclusively harvested by hand at full phenolic maturity.

The grapes are transported in boxes of 12 kg thermoregulated and spend 24 hours at 4-6 degrees in a specially designed cooling chamber for full fruit expression before spontaneous fermentation. This is followed by a further selection of the grapes, the shoulders are separated from the tops and all grapes are destemmed. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks of 7,000 litres.

The Viña Coqueta is a cuvée of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano and was aged for 25 months in French and American oak. The French oak is 80%, the American oak 20% with a total of 80% new oak and 20% in second growth. After bottling, the wine is aged in bottle for a further two years. The 2013 vintage was bottled in April 2016 and the total production is only 5000 bottles.

Dark ruby red with violet reflections.

Nose

The nose of the 2013 Viña Coqueta by Remirez de Ganuza is open-hearted with exuberant fruit notes of blueberry confit, mulberries and figs as well as a good spoonful of plum jam outline the fruit, underpinned by aromas of mild spices such as cloves, cinnamon and bourbon vanilla. The wood subordinates itself willingly to the fruit, so that the wine presents itself as unreservedly generous and expansive.

Mouth

On the palate, the Viña Coqueta is super-juicy with deep fruit and high extract without being lush. Hedonistically expansive, the joyful fruit is its leitmotif, the tannins have been outsourced to the wood, which masters its role in this case brilliantly and supports the wine like a good prompter supports the entire ensemble. With silky tannin and full fruit ahead, it flows into the ethereal fruity finish.
