Wine description for Zero Brut Nature, Base 2017 by Tarlant
- Colour & Appearance
- Rich straw yellow with golden reflections. The perlage presents itself fine and delicate – a sign of the long bottle ageing of over five years on the lees.
- Nose
- Complex and purist at once. Dominated by dried herbs, summer meadows and hay with an almost alpine character. These are joined by freshly baked baguette, butter brioche and roasted almonds – spicy-yeasty, never sweet. The fruit remains discreet in the background: mirabelle plum, ripe pear, yellow apple. Herbal freshness from lemon balm, lemon thyme and parsley lend delicate definition.
- Palate
- Here the house’s uncompromising philosophy reveals itself. The perlage lends brief creaminess before a pronounced acidity pulls the wine taut and focused through the length. Elegant, saline-mineral, cool and full of herbal freshness. The structure feels linear and invigorating – a sparkling wine of purist finesse.
- Finish
- Long, saline and of energetic clarity. Citrus notes and a freshness reminiscent of tequila define the conclusion – unusual, yet absolutely fitting.
- Terroir & Origin
- Exclusively from the family Tarlant’s own vineyards in Champagne. The twelfth generation tends these traditional parcels with the greatest care and deep understanding of the terroir.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- An equally balanced assemblage of 32% each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, supplemented by 4% of the rare Champagne grape varieties Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Petit Meslier. Base 2017 with reserve wines, filled for secondary fermentation in April 2018 and disgorged only in July 2023. Brut Nature – 0 g/l dosage. The long maturation period is Benoit’s clear signature.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with oysters, sashimi, scallops or goat’s cheese. The saline minerality harmonises beautifully with seafood and raw fish. Also a revelation with grilled asparagus and herbs.
- Special Features
- An entry-level Champagne that sets the bar high. The use of three rare grape varieties lends the Zero a unique complexity and depth that far exceeds the typical entry-level segment.
