Wine Description for Usuaran 2016 by Laderas de Montejurra

Colour & Appearance
Dense, saturated purple-red with youthful brilliance – a visual promise of concentration and maturity.
Nose
Impressively intense, this single-varietal Graciano presents itself with ripe berry fruits dominating, accompanied by dried figs and caramel notes. A delicate hint of violets lends the bouquet a floral elegance. The balance between freshness, fruit and spicy complexity is remarkably well-achieved.
Palate
Opulent and fleshy, the Usuaran unfolds on the palate without losing its structure. The ripe berry aromas continue, whilst refined tannins create a silky mouthfeel. Here the true strength of the Graciano grape reveals itself: despite its lush ripeness, a present acidity provides tension and a stable backbone. The spicy Barrique notes are evident, yet harmoniously integrated, enriching the aromatic complexity.
Finish
Long and sustained, with lingering fruit and spice notes that fade elegantly.
Terroir & Origin
From Tierra Estella, the coolest sub-zone of DO Navarra, comes this extraordinary wine. The vineyard sits at 550 metres elevation and benefits from limestone and sandstone soils. The biodynamically managed Emilio Valerio estate distributes its 40 hectares across 70 parcels at altitudes up to 700 metres – ideal conditions for freshness and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Graciano – a bold and rewarding decision. Whilst this grape variety traditionally served only as a blending partner in Rioja wines, it proves its potential as a solo performer here. The 24-month ageing in new and used French barriques gives the wine structure and complexity, without masking the varietal’s characteristic freshness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to grilled lamb rack, duck breast with fig reduction, braised beef stew or aged Manchego. The acidity structure also makes it an intriguing partner for spicy stews and Mediterranean braises.
Special Features
A fascinating example of how Graciano can shine as a solo artist. The combination of biodynamic viticulture, high altitude and cool microclimate creates a wine of remarkable balance between power and finesse.
