Wine Description for „Steinriese“ Oberbergen Bassgeige Pinot Noir GG 2023 by Franz Keller

Character
The Franz Keller estate is among the pioneers of Baden Pinot Noir and possesses in the Bassgeige vineyard site one of the region’s most expressive parcels. The „Steinriese“ as a Großes Gewächs represents the pinnacle of this work – a Pinot Noir that combines precision with Burgundian elegance. At a moderate 13.0% alcohol, this wine demonstrates finesse over power, a statement for cool stylistics in warmer times.
Terroir & Origin
The Bassgeige in Oberbergen ranks among the outstanding vineyard sites at Kaiserstuhl, that volcanic island in the Upper Rhine Graben which counts among Germany’s warmest regions. Yet the elevation and the loess-loam soils over volcanic bedrock create a distinctive microclimate. The name „Steinriese“ alludes to the mineral power of these soils, which lend the Pinot Noir structure and depth. Franz Keller cultivates these parcels with uncompromising handwork and the ambition to produce world-class wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir finds ideal conditions at Kaiserstuhl – sufficient warmth for physiological ripeness, yet in the finest vineyard sites also the necessary coolness for elegance. Franz Keller vinifies his Großes Gewächs with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation, gentle extraction, ageing in French barriques. The 2023 vintage, despite climatic challenges across Europe, demonstrates the ability of experienced winemakers to maintain balance and precision. The dry orientation underscores the serious, terroir-focused approach.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands appropriate cuisine: game dishes such as venison loin or venison medallions, braised beef, Coq au Vin or duck breast with porcini mushrooms. It also harmonises beautifully with aged soft cheeses such as Époisses or a robust Munster from neighbouring Alsace. The structure also carries lamb rack with herb crust or truffle risotto.
