Artazu is Artadi's project in Navarre. In 1996, they took over the vineyard, which is over a century old, and preserved the almost lost heritage of old vines. Artazu's soils consist of brown limestone and clayey limestone soils, overall nutrient poor and rugged plots with harsh and contrasting weather dry and hot in summer and cold and wet in winter.

The Santa Cruz de Artazu is made from 100% ancient Grenache vines, located in Artazu between 450 and 600m above sea level. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils and are produced without any use of pesticides or herbicides according to the guidelines of organic viticulture. The grapes are harvested by hand, the yield is 2.5t/ha. Vinification takes place in open stainless steel vats with cold maceration for 24-48 hours. Malolactic fermentation took place in barriques before the wine matured for 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels.

Color

Purple red with violet reflections and black core.

Nose

Red-fruited and fresh, the nose of the 2019 Santa Cruz de Artazu by Artazu flows from the glass and reminds of cherries, pomegranate, red currants and red-cheeked apples. Fresh kitchen herbs like goutweed and borage as well as mild spices like mace, juniper or cloves give it additional complexity. Fruity, fresh type with a juicy, upright character.

Mouth

Polished and joyful, it flows across the palate and combines its jovial fruit with fine-grained tannin that neatly peaks and contours it. With a cool attack and fresh acidity, it stretches far across the palate and presents itself structurally on the side of fresh and refreshing red wines. The red fruit is underpinned by a little liquorice, the tannin accompanies it into the cool finish.
