The Rollaball is a wine that doesn’t want to be explained – it wants to be drunk. Light, lively and refreshingly direct, it embodies the philosophy of Tom Lubbe and his winery Matassa: minimal intervention, maximum expression of place. With 12.0% alcohol, it remains lean and accessible without ever becoming banal. A wine for everyday drinking – in the very best sense.

Terroir & Origin

Roussillon, wedged between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, is one of France’s wildest and most headstrong wine regions. Matassa works around Calce, a small village on ancient gneiss and slate soils that demand depth and minerality from the vines. The Mediterranean climate – hot, dry, shaped by the Tramontane wind – requires varieties that know and love heat and water scarcity. The classification as Vin de France is a deliberate choice: it gives the winemaker the freedom to work beyond appellation regulations.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Carignan and Mourvèdre – two varieties that have shaped southern France for centuries. Carignan, often underestimated, brings a fascinating combination of freshness, spice and structuring acidity when grown on old vines with low yields. Mourvèdre complements with dark fruit and Mediterranean depth. In the cellar, Matassa consistently follows the principle of non-intervention: spontaneous fermentation, minimal to no sulphur, natural maturation. The result is a wine that breathes.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Rollaball is a table companion, not a showpiece. It harmonises beautifully with grilled sausages, lamb chops from the grill or a simple tomato bread salad with good olive oil. It also makes an excellent match with tapas, charcuterie or a hearty ratatouille. Served lightly chilled, it unfolds its whole unpretentious elegance.
