Wine Description for Rollaball VdF rouge 2024 by Matassa

Character
Tom Lubbe of Domaine Matassa is among the pioneers of the natural wine movement in Roussillon. His „Rollaball“ is the accessible, unpretentious interpretation of the region – a wine that prioritises freshness and drinkability over concentration. With just 12% alcohol, it embodies a deliberate departure from southern French opulence in favour of vibrancy and tension. The blend of Carignan and Mourvèdre yields a wine with Mediterranean charm that simultaneously unites lightness and substance.
Terroir & Origin
Roussillon, situated between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, offers extraordinary terroir with slate soils and limestone. Matassa works in the hills of Calce, where old vines are rooted in sparse soils. The Mediterranean climate with the Tramontane, the dry northerly wind, ensures healthy grapes and enables winemaking with minimal intervention. The VdF classification (Vin de France) allows Lubbe maximum freedom in vinification – a deliberate step away from rigid appellation regulations.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Carignan forms the backbone with its characteristic acidity and structure, whilst Mourvèdre contributes aromatic complexity and depth. Matassa vinifies according to biodynamic principles, with spontaneous fermentation through wild yeasts and without temperature control. Ageing takes place in neutral vessels to preserve fruit clarity. No fining, no filtration – the wine goes into the bottle exactly as nature made it. This philosophy yields wines of remarkable authenticity and vitality.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to Mediterranean cuisine: ratatouille, grilled vegetables or tapas harmonise perfectly. The moderate structure suits charcuterie, pâté de campagne or aged Manchego. Also an excellent choice with lamb chops with Provençal herbs or aubergine dishes. The wine’s freshness makes it the ideal terrace wine – lightly chilled and a pleasure to enjoy on its own.
