Wine Description for Barbaresco Roncagliette DOCG 2021 1500ml Magnum by Olek Bondonio
- Colour & Appearance
- Transparent luminous ruby red – classic for Nebbiolo, with that crystalline clarity that distinguishes great wines from Piedmont.
- Nose
- Here a fascinating duality reveals itself: the nose shifts between Burgundian finesse and Piedmontese spice. Fresh rose petals meet sandalwood and subtle vanilla notes from fine oak ageing. Beneath shimmer cherries and raspberries, accompanied by lavender, mint and a hint of forest floor and undergrowth – an aromatic complexity that invites lingering.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Roncagliette 2021 reveals its true greatness: silky, juicy and of striking elegance. The structure is powerful, yet the wine seems to float across the palate – transparent and fresh. Dried cherries and wild strawberries combine with subtle earthiness. The fine-grained tannin is pronounced, but never intrusive; the brilliant acidity demanding yet perfectly integrated. A wine of impressive presence that feels relaxed and at ease, yet possesses a firm backbone.
- Finish
- Long, precise and with lingering fruit and spice notes, carried by the vibrant acidity. The wine bids farewell with elegance and depth.
- Terroir & Origin
- A tiny parcel right in front of Olek’s doorstep: 50-year-old Nebbiolo vines at 350 metres altitude, rooted in heavy clay on blue marl. This demanding terroir lends the wine its characteristic tension and minerality.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo from the single vineyard site Roncagliette. Fermentation in concrete vessels with two months of skin contact and submerged cap management, gentle pressing on the basket press. Ageing for at least two years in large wooden vats. Bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal sulphur content of just 40 mg – pure craftsmanship.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine for discerning pairings: Vitello tonnato, Tajarin al tartufo, braised beef cheek, Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Castelmagno. Also an excellent choice with game birds or mushroom risotto.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing conditions. A great Barbaresco from an emerging winemaker – crafted uncompromisingly, minimally interventionist and of impressive authenticity.
