Wine Description for “SM” Santa Margherita Vino di Contrada IGT Sicily White 2023 by Occhipinti

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with almost amber reflexes – a hint of macerated grapes or extended skin contact. The colour alone already promises complexity and depth.
Nose
Here unfolds the raw wildness of Sicily: thyme, rosemary, lavender and marjoram merge with green olive and almond blossom. The fruit palette is unconventional and precise – fresh figs, mirabelle plums, Charentais melon and a greenish mango note. Maritime accents of oyster shell join in, along with vegetable nuances of artichoke and fennel. The chalky-sandy soils of Contrada Santa Margherita inscribe an almost chalky minerality into the bouquet. Intense, characterful, uncompromising.
Palate
Taut and linear like a drawn bow. This Grillo forgoes any softness – it is bone-dry, with purist precision. Herbal and vegetable aromas dominate, the fruit recedes. Reductive notes underscore the wild, untamed character. The mouthfeel is cool and demanding, with pronounced saline undertone and mineral bite. A wine that demands attention and does not seek to please, but to convince.
Finish
Long, bitter and salt-driven, with lingering herbal notes and a chalky texture that vibrates on the tongue. The minerality remains present and recalls the stony soils of its homeland.
Terroir & Origin
Contrada Santa Margherita lies in the heart of Vittoria, Sicily. The chalky-sandy soils decisively shape the character of this wine and lend it its characteristic tension and minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Grillo, presumably vinified with skin contact – typical of Arianna Occhipinti’s natural, low-intervention style. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, minimal sulphur. A wine that places terroir above technique.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This uncompromising character demands robust partners: grilled swordfish, Pasta con le Sarde, pan-fried squid with fennel, Pecorino Siciliano or Pane Cunzato with anchovies and tomatoes.
Special Features
Arianna Occhipinti counts among the pioneers of the Sicilian natural wine movement. Her wines are authentic terroir statements – wild, unfiltered and of impressive ageing potential. The SM 2023 will gain further complexity in the years to come.
