Wine Description for Grüner Veltliner Vießlinger Stern 2020 by Martin Muthenthaler

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow in the glass, luminous and clear.
Nose
Surprisingly Burgundian in character – one might easily suspect a Chardonnay. The spontaneous fermentation and maturation on full lees in a 600-litre barrel bring forth a fascinating spice with subtly oxidative notes. Yellow and white-fleshed fruits meet herbs, a hint of vanilla and subtle, restrained oak. Complex and multi-layered.
Palate
Here the true identity of the Grüner Veltliner reveals itself: the characteristic vegetable spice of the variety combines with ripe, juicy fruit. A crystalline acidity runs through the wine like a thread, lending it structure and precision. At just 12% alcohol, the wine remains lean, straightforward and elegant – a perfect example of the finesse of the 2020 vintage. The body is present, but never heavy.
Finish
The finale is salty-citric and impressively long. Above it hovers a distinct floral note, reminiscent of violets – unusual and charming in equal measure.
Terroir & Origin
The Vießlinger Stern is Muthenthaler’s monopoly vineyard site and his personal flagship, today officially classified as a Subriede of the Bruck. This small-structured, difficult-to-access vineyard with over 60 parcels is home to his oldest vines (35+ years) on orthogneiss and mica schist – soils that bring minerality and precision to the wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Grüner Veltliner from old vines. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in a single 600-litre barrel on full lees – a craft approach that lends the wine depth and texture without masking the varietal character.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Salad of golden-brown roasted artichokes with ciabatta and chilli peppers, salmon trout tartare with pickled ginger or smoked ham with pineapple and roasted grapes – the wine harmonises with vegetable notes as readily as with delicate fish dishes and fruity meat combinations.
Special Features
A Grüner Veltliner that combines Burgundian elegance with Wachau precision. The monopoly vineyard site and old vines make this wine something special – an authentic expression of terroir and craftsmanship.
