Terroir and origin

The Dão regionsurrounded by mountain ranges, with its cool nights and granite-rich soils, offers ideal conditions for red wines rich in finesse. Here, at an altitude of 400-700 metres, the vines thrive under the influence of both the continental climate and the Atlantic breezes, which leads to a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. The granite soils give the wine a distinctive minerality and freshness that is characteristic of the best examples from this region.

Winemaking philosophy

Dirk Niepoortoriginally known for his outstanding port wines, has extended his flair for authentic terroir expressions to the Dão region. His approach is always minimalist - he lets the landscape and the indigenous grape varieties speak rather than over-moulding them. The Conciso is a prime example of Niepoort's ability to capture the essence of a region without denying his own signature. The careful vinification emphasises the freshness and precision that is characteristic of both Niepoort and the best Dão wines.

The grape varieties

The combination of Jaen (known as Mencía in Spain) and Baga combines the spicy, floral profile of the first variety with the structure-giving strength and longevity of the second. Baga, often unruly and demanding to grow, finds ideal conditions in the cooler climate of the Dão to develop its qualities without appearing overly rustic.

Food pairing suggestions

Conciso harmonises perfectly with regional Portuguese cuisine - try it with grilled bacalhau, slow-braised lamb or traditional stews with beans and vegetables. Its elegant structure and moderate intensity also make it an excellent accompaniment to mushroom-based dishes and cheeses that are not too intense.
