Wine Description for Marsannay „Clos du Roy“ rouge AOC 2023 by Charlopin Tissier

Colour & Appearance
A red wine that gleams in the glass with a medium to deep ruby-red colour – typical of a young Pinot Noir from Burgundy with good concentration.
Nose
Here a remarkable discrepancy becomes apparent: the present tasting note describes a white wine with stone fruit, citrus notes and banana. For a Marsannay Rouge made from Pinot Noir, however, one would expect a bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, strawberries and fine spice notes – possibly accompanied by undergrowth and delicate smoke.
Palate
The description speaks of a powerful attack with espresso, toffee and roasted aromas – hints of ambitious barrel ageing. Despite the fullness, the wine develops verticality and fine-grained minerality. With a Pinot Noir from Clos du Roy, one should expect silky tannins, red fruit and the typical Burgundian elegance, paired with the earthy minerality of this vineyard site.
Finish
Long and mineral-driven with fine-grained structure that develops verticality – a positive sign for ageing potential.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos du Roy is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites of Marsannay, the northernmost village of the Côte de Nuits. The soils offer a blend of limestone and clay that gives Pinot Noir structure and finesse.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, 13.5% vol. The wine was apparently aged with considerable oak influence, which is intended to lend structure and complexity to the young 2023 vintage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Coq au Vin, duck breast with cherry sauce, aged Comté or Époisses, lamb rack with herb crust, mushroom risotto.
Special Features
A young, ambitiously aged Marsannay from a renowned vineyard site – potential for 5-8 years of development.
