Wine Description for Marsannay „Le Chapitre“ rouge AOC 2023 by Charlopin Tissier
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense, dark ruby red with pronounced violet reflections – a wine that reveals its youthfulness and concentration even in the glass.
- Nose
- This Marsannay presents itself with depth and masculine character, displaying intense dark fruit: cherry, plum and rosehip merge with earthy notes, leather, tobacco and a hint of coffee. Multi-layered and complex – a wine that demands time in the decanter and then positively mesmerises.
- Palate
- On the palate, a refreshing, precise acidity harmonises perfectly with mineral depth. The fruit comes across as red-berried and vibrant, without being intrusive. Here you sense the stony structure of the terroir – a wine with backbone and drinkability in equal measure, one that naturally calls for a second glass.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with fine spice and persistent minerality that underscores its Burgundian character.
- Terroir & Origin
- The tiny parcel of just 0.15 hectares in the vineyard site Le Chapitre lies between the renowned crus Clos du Roy and Montre-Cul. Only recently admitted to the Marsannay appellation, this medieval vineyard site is nonetheless historically significant. The organically farmed vineyard is rooted in red, stony loam over sandy Comblanchien limestone with characteristic grèzes lités – a terroir that guarantees depth and minerality.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Noir, completely destemmed, vinified with cool pre-fermentation and spontaneous fermentation. Maturation takes place over 18 months in 228-litre barriques (primarily François Frères) with moderate new oak of 20-30% – enough to provide structure without dominating the fruit.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- This wine calls for bold flavours: duck breast with thyme jus, wild boar terrine, rare roasted beef steak with herb butter or aged Comté. Smoky and herbal components particularly enhance its earthy complexity.
- Special Features
- An authentic Marsannay from microscopic production that proves this often underrated appellation can produce wines of remarkable depth and complexity – at a fraction of the price of more prestigious neighbouring vineyard sites.
