Wine description for Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2018 from Ca' La Bionda
Colour & appearance
Deep dark cherry red, almost black at the core, with minimal lightening towards the rim - the colour already signals the concentration and intensity that awaits.
Nose
The nose reveals an impressive aromatic complexity: sweet black cherries and pickled cranberries merge with blueberry compote and prunes. These are joined by liquid dark chocolate, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla and marzipan. Floral notes of lavender and a musky depth round off the olfactory experience - an aromatic profile that shows the appassimento method in all its splendour.
Palate
A veritable explosion of fruit unfolds on the palate. The wine floods the tongue with dense, concentrated fruit and seductive sweetness without being sticky. Dried fruit and chocolate flavours dominate, but are skilfully countered by invigorating acidity and structuring tannins. The 16.5% alcohol is perfectly integrated and gives the wine warmth without sharpness. A powerhouse with astonishing finesse - exactly what you would expect from the historic sites in Marano and Fumane on limestone.
General information
The grapes - Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella - come from the classic Valpolicella zones and were fermented with wild yeasts, which brings additional complexity. Serve slightly chilled at 16-18°C to emphasise the freshness.
Food pairing suggestions
This Amarone calls for strong dishes: Ossobuco alla Milanese, Braised beef roulades, Game with cranberry sauce or Grilled ribeye steak. Also to matured Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino an excellent choice. The fruity components harmonise wonderfully with Roast duck with cherry sauce.
Special features
The spontaneous fermentation and the origin from the historic Classico vineyards give this Amarone a special authenticity. A wine that combines power and elegance - not a heavyweight, but an athlete.
