Wine description for Autochthon 2021 from Bencze Birtok

Colour & appearance

A cloudy, unfiltered golden yellow colour with light reflections that immediately reveals the natural vinification.

Nose

Initially closed and reductive - a wine that virtually demands the carafe. With air, a fascinating bouquet of Mediterranean herbs such as sage and rosemary unfolds, underpinned by wild wooden pears and lemony grapefruit. Youth is evident in the fine yeast notes, while lime blossom and verbena add complexity. A natural wine that makes no compromises.

Palate

On the palate, the tension between lively acidity and mineral texture is impressive. Orange zest and crisp Granny Smith-Apple flavours dominate, accompanied by a fine bitter note reminiscent of apple peel. The moderate alcohol content of 11.5% gives the wine a remarkable lightness and drinkability. The long finish reveals aniseed and white pepper - evidence of the volcanic terroir. A wine with development potential that will reward patience.

General information

This Hungarian natural wine from Lake Balaton combines the indigenous grape varieties Furmint, Hárslevelü and Kéknyelü on volcanic basalt soil. The grapes are deliberately harvested at different stages of ripeness, fermented with minimal skin contact and then matured in amphorae. An authentic expression of Hungarian wine culture with minimalist intervention in the cellar.

Food pairing suggestions

The salty minerality and lively acidity predestine this wine for Freshwater fish such as zander or trout. It also harmonises with Goat cheese, Mushroom dishes or slightly spicier Asian cuisine. Its complexity calls for dishes with depth and character.

Special features

An uncompromising natural wine that honestly reflects its volcanic origins and the characteristics of the Hungarian grape varieties. The amphora maturation gives additional texture and depth. Be sure to decant and serve not too cold to experience the full complexity. An intellectual wine for explorers that impressively demonstrates the renaissance of Pannonian wine culture.
