Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow in the glass, luminous and clear – a promising first impression.
Nose
The bouquet impresses with a powerful stone fruit aromatics: apricots, mirabelle plums and vineyard peach dominate, whilst earthy and stony nuances provide cool, mineral depth. A rich herbal interplay lends the aroma additional complexity and layering.
Palate
On the palate, juicy yellow fruit unfolds with vibrant citrus notes. The structure reveals itself taut and precise: a fine mineral grip and a subtle saline note create tension and drinking flow. Each sip invites the next – a Riesling with invigorating freshness, expressive fruit and impressive depth.
Finish
Long and fresh with persistent minerality and lemony precision. The saline component fades elegantly and leaves a clear, focused impression.
Terroir & Origin
Hohen-Sülzen lies in the Eisbachtal, where the cold mountain stream from the Donnersberg massif creates marked temperature differences between day and night. These cooler nights shape the character of the wine decisively: they preserve freshness and promote slow, aromatic ripening. The VDP Erste Lage designation underscores the outstanding quality of this vineyard site.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling pure, with moderate 12% alcohol and dry orientation. Battenfeld-Spanier works with precision and terroir focus – this wine is an authentic expression of its origin.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The saline minerality and vibrant acidity make the wine an ideal companion for oysters, scallops or sushi. It also harmonises beautifully with pan-fried char, asparagus with beurre blanc or goat’s cheese.
Special Features
This 2023 is only at the beginning of its development. With two to five years of bottle age, it will gain further in complexity and depth – a Riesling with genuine ageing potential and classic vineyard site profile.
