Tasting note

Colour & Appearance
Luminous lemon yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that radiates energy even in the glass.
Nose
The nose is complex and multi-layered: spice and stone dominate the first impression, accompanied by blonde tobacco and vibrant citrus fruit from ripe lemons, blood oranges and grapefruits with pith. Fine herbal notes join in – thyme, nettle and calendula – along with a slightly grapey, extract-rich depth. A bouquet of rare precision and complexity.
Palate
On the palate, the Kastanienbusch 2023 reveals itself as juicy, open and seductively accessible – with white-fleshed fruit and fresh citrus notes. The acidity structure combines generosity and tension in an elegance typical of the 2023 vintage. Towards the finish, the wine gains structure, develops a fine extract grip and unfolds an overwhelming minerality and salinity. Cool and delicate, yet of impressive power – a Riesling that seemingly effortlessly unites opposites.
Finish
Long, saline-mineral and of great precision. The finish lingers and leaves the unmistakable fingerprint of the Oberrotliegendes – iron-rich, uncompromising, unforgettable.
Terroir & Origin
The Kastanienbusch near Birkweiler, at 320 metres above sea level, is the highest Große-Gewächs vineyard site in the Palatinate. Protected in a valley basin from the cool winds of the Palatinate Forest, the vines rest on granite, slate and melaphyre stone, interspersed with iron-rich Oberrotliegendes. The slope gradient of 30–35 % ensures maximum sun exposure with a cool microclimate – ideal conditions for Riesling of the highest tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Riesling, vinified after destemming with approximately 24 hours of skin contact. Following natural sedimentation and pre-clarification, fermentation took place in stainless steel, followed by six months of ageing on fine lees – a process that imparts texture and depth without masking the origin. Alcohol: 12.5 % vol., virtually dry.
Special Features
This 1500-ml magnum is more than a format – it is a promise. Great Rieslings mature in the magnum more slowly, more deeply, more perfectly. The Kastanienbusch 2023 is already regarded as the finest young vintage of this vineyard site – a wine that should be set aside and opened with reverence in ten years’ time.
