Wine description for Pinot Gris 2022 by Bencze Birtók
- Character
- A dry, taut Pinot Gris with just 11.0% ABV — light-footed, cool and of remarkable clarity. Rather than opulent richness, this wine focuses on fine minerality, delicate fruit and a precise acid structure that makes it highly drinkable well beyond its vintage.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines are rooted on the south-facing slopes of Szent György-hegy, an extinct volcanic cone on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. The basalt soil, interspersed with clay and iron-rich brown earth, shapes the wine’s cool, saline note. István Bencze has farmed his plots biodynamically since 2011 — a philosophy that regards the vineyard as a living organism and is reflected in the unadulterated expression of the terroir.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Gris — rather rare in Hungary, yet cultivated with conviction at Bencze. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in amphorae, those ancient clay vessels that allow gentle micro-oxygenation without overshadowing the fruit. The wine remains unfiltered and unfined, a purist approach that demands the utmost care in the vineyard and lends this Pinot Gris an unusually textured, almost grainy structure.
- Food Pairings
- Its vibrant acidity and mineral tension make it an ideal partner for pan-fried pike-perch fillets from Lake Balaton, roasted cauliflower with tahini or young Pecorino. It also shows its best alongside Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass — a wine that does not dominate at the table but complements with precision.
