Wine description for SP68 Bianco IGT Sicilia 2024 by Occhipinti

Character
Arianna Occhipinti’s SP68 Bianco embodies the new lightness of Sicily – a wine that deliberately works against the cliché of heavy, high-alcohol southern wines. With just 12% alcohol, this cuvée of Muscat and Albanello presents itself as refreshing, eminently drinkable and of remarkable aromatic clarity. The name refers to the Strada Provinciale 68, that country road between Vittoria and Ragusa that runs through the heart of this unique wine landscape.
Terroir & Origin
The vines are rooted in south-eastern Sicily, a region characterised by calcareous soils and proximity to the Mediterranean. Occhipinti manages her vineyards according to biodynamic principles, which is reflected in the vitality and expressiveness of her wines. The Mediterranean climate with its hot, dry summers is tempered by cooling sea breezes that preserve the grapes‘ fresh acidity structure. The winemaker is among the pioneers of a new Sicilian wine culture that places elegance before power.
Grape variety & Vinification
The combination of aromatic Muscat and the rare indigenous variety Albanello is unusual and characteristic of Occhipinti’s experimental approach. Albanello, an almost forgotten Sicilian grape variety, brings structure and minerality, whilst Muscat provides floral and fruity notes. Vinification is carried out with minimal intervention – spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, little or no sulphur addition. The result is a wine of authentic vitality that expresses the terroir unfiltered.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Mediterranean white wine harmonises beautifully with grilled fish, seafood and squid. It is also an excellent choice with pasta with sardines, lemon risotto or goat’s cheese. The aromatic component of the Muscat makes it the ideal companion for Asian cuisine with coriander and ginger as well as for Moroccan tagine.
