Wine Description for Sgarzon Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2016 1500ml Magnum by Foradori
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep garnet red, already hinting at the cool origin and unconventional maturation in amphora.
- Nose
- The Sgarzon reveals itself as the wilder, cooler sibling in the Foradori range. Sloes, pomegranate and ivy dominate a bouquet of remarkable freshness. These are joined by herbal notes, a hint of raw meat, mineral stoniness and juicy ripe elderberry. The wine’s youth shows in a fine lees note that lends additional complexity to the whole. A touch of bitter tobacco rounds off the aromatic profile.
- Palate
- Here the magic of the tinaja maturation reveals itself: a fine yet present tannin reminiscent of the rubbed surface of fired clay, lending the wine an unmistakable, silky-textured structure. The fruit remains cool and juicy – sour cherries and sloes dominate. The youthful, demanding acidity meets a tingling minerality that makes the wine vibrant and clear. Everything feels pure, refined and of remarkable precision. At only 12.5% alcohol, the Sgarzon remains elegant and moreish.
- Finish
- In the finale, the fruit becomes darker but remains on the crisply fresh side. Bitter tobacco accompanies the long, mineral conclusion that underscores the earthy structure and elegance of the wine.
- Terroir & Origin
- The 2.5-hectare vineyard site Sgarzon (Trentino dialect for „vine tendril“) lies in the Campo Rotaliano near Mezzolombardo on sandy, alluvial sediment. The cool site fundamentally shapes this wine’s character, lending it its characteristic freshness and tension.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Teroldego, the autochthonous grape variety of Trentino, is radically interpreted here: eight months‘ maceration in Spanish clay amphoras (tinajas). This ancient method gives the wine its unique texture and mineral precision.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The earthy minerality and cool fruit harmonise beautifully with beetroot with labneh and za’atar, grilled aubergines with chicken liver or lamb kofta with pine nuts and smoked paprika.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises an even slower, more harmonious development. A wine that already fascinates now but will gain in elegance and complexity in the coming years.
