Wine Description for Schlossberg Achkarren Spätburgunder GG 2023 by Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Luminous ruby red with brilliant clarity, medium colour intensity – a classic appearance for Spätburgunder from a cool vintage. The wine displays the typical transparency of great Pinots.
Nose
Precise and cool with notes of red cherries, lingonberries and wild strawberries. Beneath these, fine hints of rose petals, damp earth and a touch of smoke. The volcanic soils of the Schlossberg are reflected in mineral nuances – flint and graphite lend depth and complexity.
Palate
Elegant and taut with vibrant acidity that carries and structures the wine. On the palate, red fruit and cranberry dominate, accompanied by fine spice and a silky tannin structure. At 13% alcohol, the wine shows restraint and precision – not a gram too much. The texture is fine-grained, almost Burgundian in its finesse, with palpable energy and tension.
Finish
Long, cool and mineral. The acidity carries far, the fruit remains present, and a saline note lingers. A wine that invites you to take the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Schlossberg in Achkarren ranks among Baden’s finest vineyard sites. The steep, south-facing slopes with volcanic stone create ideal conditions for world-class Spätburgunder. Friedrich Keller is committed to organic viticulture and experiments with biodynamic methods – a generational shift that you can taste.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Classic Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) in the Großes Gewächs style. The wine is aged presumably in traditional wooden barrels, with fruit and minerality taking centre stage – no heavy-handed oak, but pure terroir.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect with duck breast roasted pink, veal fillet with morels, Coq au Vin or aged Comté. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes and game birds.
Special Features
A Großes Gewächs from the young 2023 vintage that already offers drinking pleasure now, yet comes with considerable ageing potential for 5-8 years. Friedrich Keller’s signature is evident here: precise, purist, terroir-focused.
