Wine Description for La Montagne AOC 2022 by Saint Jean Du Barroux

Colour & Appearance
Intense straw yellow in the glass, which already announces the wine’s concentration and maturity visually.
Nose
A fragrant aromatic profile that reveals the complexity of old vines: white flowers and ripe pears combine with creamy vanilla notes and orange zest. These are joined by more austere accents of grapefruit peel and anise – a successful balance between southern ripeness and Mediterranean freshness.
Palate
Silky and charming, this white Ventoux presents itself on the palate without slipping into opulence. A fascinating blend of white-fleshed fruits, fennel seed, anise and fine herbal notes is carried by a mineral, stony component. The wine possesses body and structure, yet remains elegant and inviting to drink.
Finish
Long and characterised by fine salinity, which rounds off the wine perfectly and invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The vines are planted at considerable altitude on Mont Ventoux, where the coolness of the elevation provides freshness and elegance. The vines over 50 years old yielded just 15 hl/ha – a yield reduction that translates into concentration and complexity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A classic southern Rhône blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc. Philippe Gimel vinified the wine in stainless steel to preserve the fruit and freshness. The result is reminiscent of a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape – with the potential, according to the winemaker, to age for over 20 years.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with grilled monkfish, scallops with fennel vegetables, goat’s cheese or Provençal fish soups. Also an excellent choice with poultry in herb sauce.
Special Features
A remarkable white Ventoux that demonstrates this appellation has far more to offer than simple everyday wines. The combination of old vines, extreme yield reduction and altitude creates a wine of unusual depth and ageing potential.
