Wine description for Rully 1er Cru rouge “Cloux” 2022 by A. et P. de Villaine

Character
When Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, vinifies a Pinot Noir from Rully, it is a lesson in Burgundian authenticity. The Cloux 2022 embodies the philosophy that de Villaine pursued throughout his life: transparency of terroir before technical over-working. This Premier Cru from the Côte Chalonnaise displays the concentrated ripeness typical of 2022 whilst maintaining Burgundian finesse – a wine that combines substance with elegance.
Terroir & Origin
Rully lies south of the Côte d’Or and is often underestimated, yet offers excellent conditions for Pinot Noir on calcareous soils. The Cloux vineyard site ranks among the most renowned Premier Crus of the appellation. The 2022 vintage was characterised in Burgundy by heat and drought, resulting in early harvesting and concentrated grapes. The de Villaines manage their parcels biodynamically, which was particularly important in this challenging year for the natural balance of the vines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in the hands of A. et P. de Villaine means minimal intervention and maximum respect for the fruit. Vinification follows traditional Burgundian principles: gentle extraction, ageing in barrels with moderate new oak, no cosmetic adjustments. The alcohol content of 14% reflects the warmth of the vintage, yet remains within the bounds of Burgundian elegance. The result is a wine with clear structure, silky texture and that inner tension which distinguishes great Burgundy wines.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Rully Premier Cru harmonises beautifully with roasted duck breast, Coq au Vin or grilled tuna. Burgundian cuisine offers ideal partners: Bœuf Bourguignon, Époisses cheese or mushroom dishes with morels. The wine also demonstrates its versatility with pink roasted lamb with Provençal herbs.
