Wine Description for Barolo Chinato by Roagna

Colour & Appearance
Deep garnet red with amber-coloured reflexes at the rim, indicating the aromatic infusion. In the glass, it displays a medium viscosity with fine legs.
Nose
Complex bouquet of dried roses, cherries in alcohol and orange zest. Spicy notes of cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and a subtle china bark bitterness layer over these. In the background, typical Nebbiolo aromas of tar and leather emerge, complemented by hints of herbs and sweet spices.
Palate
On the palate, this Barolo Chinato presents itself with remarkable balance between sweetness and bitterness. The Nebbiolo base reveals its elegant tannin structure, which harmonises perfectly with the aromatic herbal infusion. Dark cherry fruit, candied orange peel and a hint of chocolate meld with the characteristic china bark bitterness. Despite 16% alcohol, the wine never feels heavy, instead displaying remarkable elegance.
Finish
Long and persistent with a perfect balance between sweet spice notes and the bitter china component. The fine tannins of Nebbiolo provide structure, whilst herbs and citrus peel linger.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The base is a traditionally aged Barolo from Nebbiolo grapes, which is aromatised according to an old Piedmontese recipe with china bark, herbs and spices. The Roagna family works with uncompromising tradition – long ageing in large wooden casks, no barriques, no frills. The wine only reaches the market when it is ready to drink.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Classically served as a digestif after an opulent meal. Excellent with dark chocolate, panna cotta or zabaione. Also interesting with aged blue cheese or Gorgonzola. In the Piedmontese tradition, it is often served with amaretti or baci di dama.
Special Features
Barolo Chinato is a historic Piedmontese speciality, developed in the 19th century as a tonic. Roagna’s version remains true to the traditional recipe and demonstrates why this aromatised wine rarity ranks among Italy’s most fascinating digestifs.
