Wine description for Pies Negros 2021 from Artuke

Colour & appearance

Lively ruby red with youthful brilliance in the glass - a wine that already visually announces its freshness and vitality.

Nose

The bouquet surprises with its cool elegance: white pepper meets bright red fruit, accompanied by a subtle, almost fleshy spiciness that gives the wine a grounding. This nose shows the Rioja from its Atlantic-influenced, finesse-rich side - lively and yet complex, without any heaviness.

Palate

The Pies Negros 2021 reveals its true strength on the palate: juicy, lean and with impressive tension. The fine-grained tannins and silky texture create a harmonious balance, while the wine flows tautly and precisely through the mouth. Despite ageing in oak barrels, the wood remains invisible - fruit, freshness and an elegant structure dominate here. The medium-length finish leaves a clear, pure impression. A prime example of modern Spanish winemaking that emphasises drinking pleasure over power.

General information

The brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco vinify this local wine from around 90 per cent Tempranillo and Graciano from vineyards in Ábalos, which lie between 550 and 620 metres above sea level in Rioja Alavesa. The Atlantic influence at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria significantly characterises this wine. The wine is matured mainly in used 225 and 500 litre barrels, supplemented by a small portion in concrete tanks - a method that preserves freshness and promotes elegance.

Food pairing suggestions

The Pies Negros 2021 is a versatile companion: Grilled salmon or Tuna harmonise perfectly with its slender structure. Also recommended are pink roasted rack of lamb, Pimientos de Padrón, Grilled chorizo or a mature Manchego.

Special features

This wine epitomises the new generation of Spanish winemakers who prioritise finesse over opulence. With its excellent price-pleasure ratio and uncompromising focus on drinkability, the Pies Negros 2021 shows that great Rioja doesn't have to be heavy - it can also dance light-footedly.
