Wine description for the Langenlois Grosse Reserve Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature from Loimer
Fred Loimer's ambitious Blanc de Blancs from the Kamptal impressively proves that Austrian sparkling wines can be on a par with great champagnes. This cuvée of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris combines the 2018 and 2019 vintages to create a complex, multi-layered sparkling wine of remarkable depth.
Colour & appearance
The colour in the glass is a brilliant straw yellow with greenish reflections. The medium-large, persistent perlage testifies to the long ageing on the lees and ensures an elegant, lively mousseux.
Nose
The nose reveals a fascinating duality: rich yellow stone fruit aromas meet intense green herbal notes. The 36-month yeast ageing manifests itself in subtle hints of Butterscotch and Lemon tart. Fresh citrus notes - Bergamot, Lime - enliven the flavour profile, while Grilled pineapple provides exotic depth. A bouquet of herbs from Lemon balm, Sage and Thyme gives the wine a Mediterranean vibrancy.
Palate
The first sip surprises with a juicy flavour and simultaneous precision. The creamy mousseux initially builds up a soft texture, underpinned by yeasty, slightly smoky notes. But then - and this is where Loimer's signature is evident - a vital acidity sets in, refreshing the palate and revealing the mineral structure. The Brut Nature character (zero grams of dosage) emphasises the purist philosophy. Fruit and herbs duel for minutes in the long finish - impressive proof of the ageing potential of this sparkling wine.
General information
The grapes were selectively harvested in 2018 and 2019, gently pressed (only 50 litres per 100 kilograms) and fermented in neutral wooden barrels. After at least 36 months on the lees, the wine was disgorged in September 2023 without any dosage. With 12% alcohol, the wine shows elegance instead of power.
Food pairing suggestions
The salty minerality harmonises perfectly with Fried prawns with seaweed dip, Baked onions with anchovies and mint or Stewed chard with tomatoes and green olives.
Special features
An authentic, uncompromising sparkling wine that combines Austrian terroir interpretation with classic methods - patience in the bottle is rewarded.
